Texas is the second biggest state area-wise in the United States after Alaska. Texas' natural beauty is unrivaled by any other state and Democrats have committed to preserving environment for future generations. But this is easier said than done, because the present Republican policies are endangering the natural balance leading to changing climatic patterns affecting even agriculture and cattle ranching - the primary activities of most rural Texans. They propose to implement the following steps :
1. Appoint qualified competent professionals as regulators to head environmental agencies thereby replacing the current Republican Governor Perry's "revolving door" arbitrary practices that involved appointment of people with vested interests in propagating use of pollution causing systems .
2. To frame effective guidelines outlining rules regarding permission for setting-up additional coal-fired power plants.In fact, coal-fired power plants are the biggest polluters and many nations are exploring other environmentally friendly sources of generating power.
3. Making it mandatory for all coal-burning power plants to reduce mercury emissions.by 90% to protect women and unborn child.
4. Formulate environmental "sting" rules that protect general populace.
5. Ensure complete labeling of food products.
6. Prevent nuclear waste imports from other countries.
7. Protect private land owners and ownerships protection from land sharks.
8. Promote awareness of pollution and methods to reduce them.
9. Provide protection against transmission of highly explosive materials through pipelines passing through watersheds, aquifiers, etc., by imposing stiff penalties and sanctions
10. Set cleaner emission standards for vehicles.
11. Take steps to reduce levels of illness-causing bacteria in public waters to meet EPA standards.
12. To promote development of alternative sources of energy and alternative modes of transportation.
Texas Democrats are taking steps on a war footing to stop further damage. Will they win the environmental war? Yes, only if they can regain control in Texas and that is where you play a key role. What is your Decision?
