Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards is proposing a scholarship program “College for Everyone” in which he wants to invest about eight billion dollars in college education. Edwards proposal is similar to a situation in Snow Hill, North Carolina where the Center for Promise and Opportunity Foundation gave students the opportunity to go college.
In the suburb community of Snow Hill, Greene Central High School announced an increase in the number of graduating seniors going to college, from 54 percent in 2005 to 74 percent in 2007. This change comes about because of the hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships that were given to graduating seniors.
Edward’s plan is to give every young person an opportunity to reach their dreams by paying for the first year of college, if they are willing to work hard and stay out of trouble. Under this plan, in order to get a scholarship for the first year, students will have to work at least 10 hours a week. Edwards would also like to let the students borrow directly from the Department of Education so students would not have to get high interest student loans from banks.
The Center for Promise and Opportunity Foundation is a non-profit organization that was started in 2004 to help high school seniors go to college free for one year. As chairmen of this foundation, John Edwards hopes that if he gets elected as president he will be able to help make this program more national. He also has other organizations that offer students the opportunity to go to college if they want to.
