Eight people are competing for a chance to run for president. Six of them fit the traditional profile of former contestants. White, male, in their fifties, businessmen or lawyers, been involved in politics for a while.
However, most debate is currently being generated by the remaining two. A woman and a black man. One a former first lady with a number of years in front of the press and the people and the other a relative novice in Washington, with excellent oratory skills and a last name generates a lot of questions.
We are not sure who will be president. One thing is for sure, America is presented with the opportunity for a change. Who will they choose?
A year ago, I would have said that the next elections will bring about a change in guard at the White House. I was certain that the Republicans were on their way out. Not anymore. The person at the helm is not chosen merely on qualifications and potential. They need votes. While most people would not have a problem with a woman president or for that matter a black president, most people don’t vote. Therein lies the difference. More people vote for the future American Idol than for the future president.
Voting banks consist of conservatives, liberals and people in between. Conservatives tend to vote for republicans and liberals tend to vote for democrats. The decider votes come from the people in between. They tend to be conservative with liberal values. Nobody knows which way they will go, and there lies the risk for the democrats.
So, the question that comes to mind is: Are the democrats shooting themselves in the foot? Will Hillary or Obama end up becoming a secret weapon for the republicans or are they the change America needs?
