The United States of America will be holding their 56th quadrennial elections to elect their new President and Vice-President on November 04, 2008. An election year is the time for review, introspection and planning for the future. Both, the political parties as well as the voters look back on the years gone by since the last elections, the promises made and the actual results delivered, quality of life today compared to a couple of years back and decide on their future course of action.
Today, the Republican Party is at its weakest in 25 years as its economic and social policies have brought the country's life to a standstill. Increased cost of health-care, high educational fees and rising inflation have left the average American struggling to get by.
The American voters today are a disillusioned and frustrated lot and many allude to a sense of doom - feeling of helplessness and inability to control one's destiny both domestically and internationally. If you thought it is the effect of 9/11 and the Iraq war, you are partially correct. The loss of jobs, loss of purchasing power, inability to access quality health care, loss of affordable housing facilities, drop in standards of living due to rising cost of living and most important inability to take any action, either individually or collectively, due to corrupt practices and unholy nexus between industry-corporate-politics-bureaucracy and media leads to feelings of political impotency. Some of the major issues which are making American voters skeptical are :
Add to this the incumbent Republican government's increased war spending which reduced $236 billion federal budget surplus into a $163 billion deficit.
The American electorate is looking towards the Democrats to get them out of this mess that the Republicans have put them into. But are the Democrats ready to take up this challenge? Will they grab this historic opportunity or will they lose this golden chance to change the course of American destiny in this new era? Only time will tell.
I love politics.
